Great Books in a Great Genre

Crime/Thrillers are one of my favourite types of novel, and have been ever since I was a teenager (or before if you count the Hardy Boys or the Three Investigators, but that's for a different article!). Other genres come and go as my interest shifts, but I always come back to crime and thrillers. Here's my personal Top 10, highly subjective obviously, but hopefully there'll be some books of interest on the list for everyone interested in the genre.

1. 'Killing Floor' by Lee Child. This is the author's first book, and still his best. In introduces Jack Reacher, a maverick ex-military cop, who decides to travel round America after he leaves the military. In this book he ends up in a small town in Georgia where he immediately gets arrested and thrown in jail for a murder he didn't, and couldn't have, committed. Written in the first person, this is an extraordinary first novel. Very violent and gruesome in places, but if you don't mind that you should love this book.

Top Ten Dean Koontz Books

Of all the writers and published writers in the wide world one is my absolute favorite. That one is none other than Dean R. Koontz. Mr. Koontz has been writing novels, short stories, and the like since 1968 when his first book “Star Quest” was published. He is also known to have written several novels and stories under an array of pseudonyms early on in his writing career. Dean Koontz’s breakthrough novel came in 1980 with the release of “Watchers.” He is widely known for writing suspense type novels with elements of horror, mystery, and science fiction. Of all the roughly 55 novels that Dean Koontz has written, this is my top ten list. Compiling this list was actually harder than I originally imagined and I sometimes found myself torn between books for a spot on the list.

I’ve written about one other favorite author here, now in this I’ll discuss my other favorite author Stephen King.  No other author that I have ever read has been so insanely easy to be scared or terrified in reading their works as Stephen King.  From the great books he has written and that I have read (this is not an all inclusive list as I haven’t read all of his books) many of them have scared me from varying degrees.  In popular culture if you said Stephen King, 99 percent of the population knows who he is and that he is the master of horror stories.  Stephen King has written everything from epic novels, novels, short stories, poems, and screen plays.  More movies have been made from his books than any other author.  This is why Stephen King is my second favorite author.
